In the Marche Region urban quality plays a critical role, especially when judged in light of the shift in the local society’s preferences, the ecological crisis and globalization. It has to be recognised that in the Marche Region’s urban systems urban quality – defined as quality in the urban scene, environmental performances of the built environment, availability of the basic public goods, social equality – is very poor. It continues to diminish under the effect of various structural factors such as, among others, (a) the low design quality of new buildings and public spaces, (b) the increase in settlement dispersion, (c) the lack of maintenance investment in the current private and public housing stock and infrastructures. This exerts profound negative effects both on the ‘static efficiency’ and ‘dynamic efficiency’ of the Marche Region’s main urban systems.

This study has been conducted in 2009 on behalf of the Marche Region (Servizio Ambiente e Paesaggio)
