Civitanova Marche: Urban Renewal and Economic development

In Italy and in Europe urban quality is today a fundamental public policy issue. Since some years it has become one of the most important factors of ‘territorial competition’. Certainly, urban quality is a key factor for firms that need a territory that is functional to their development strategies and capable to sustain not only the localization of firms but also the advanced services and the management functions – activities of ever-increasing relevance that tend to concentrate in cities endowed with high environmental and functional qualities. But urban quality is also of utmost importance for the local society because it directly contributes to its economic wellbeing.

Against this background it is to be placed the reflection on the urban and functional renewal of the inner centre of Civitanova Marche – a municipality that plays a crucial role in the economic development of the Province of Macerata, being a gravitational centre of its most important urban system. Civitanova Marche inner centre is an area for which design quality and maintenance of buildings and public realm and environmental performance of the built environment are objectives of critical importance in order to generate positive externalities and host services functional to individuals’ processes of production, exchange and socialization.

The four studies we have conducted on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce of Macerata have the purpose of contributing at the transition process that Civitanova Marche should start in order to meet the standards of the ‘European model of city’.
